Garfield was trying to prove to the people that he deserved to be president and he did. In his first week as president his newly appointed postmaster general found criminal actions going on in the post office and instead of covering this up Garfield investigated the matter and solved it.

Many people didn’t think much of Garfield when he first was elected and it even got to the point where someone shot him. Fortunately he still lived, ten weeks later though he died as an effect of the poor medical knowledge of the age.
