Arthur’s major contribution was the Pendleton Act, which reformed the Civil Service Act. The Civil Services Act’s reform made it so that no one could demand campaign contributions from federal employees. This means that political parties were also going to be funded differently.

What did he do after he left office:

About a year after he left office Arthur got ill and wanted all his papers and records to be burned. And he died the next day on November 18, 1886.
