When the book A Century of Dishonor was published by Helen Hunt Jackson it brought the treatment of the Indians to the attention of Americans. Soon many people were forming groups to help the Indians with their rights. Finally congress passed the Severalty Act of 1887, an act that gave Indians citizenship if they gave up membership of their tribe. But this did not work, many Indians didn’t even believe that land could be owned when it was given to them. And the Act generally did more harm than good.

What did he do after he left office:

After Cleveland’s defeat he thought his government career was over, but his wife thought otherwise. She told a servant to keep everything in the White House in order, so that in four years on this day it will still be in good condition. He and his wife and his new born child stayed in a hotel while they were searching for the perfect house. But he wasn’t satisfied with that. And he ran for President again, and won.
