Wilson was the president during the first World War, for most of his terms he tried to be neutral but when his neutrality wasn’t respected the United States entered that war. A telegram had gone out from Germany to Mexico asking if they could be allies and promised that if Mexico agreed Germany would help regain the “lost territories”. When Wilson found the message he declared war on Germany.

Only two presidents have ever left office and served as president of the American Historical Association, one was Theodore Roosevelt and the other was Woodrow Wilson. He died not long after on February 3rd, 1924 from a stroke.
