What was his major contribution while in office:

While Zachary Taylor opposed the Fugitive Slave Act, when he died he gave his power to Millard Filmore, who agreed with the Act. He thought that if he enacted this he would have the southerners be more willing to vote him in office for a second term. Unfortunately this did not do what he had hoped, instead he was not even nominated as the Whig candidate. So he is known as the Last of the Whigs. 

What did he do after he left office:

After Fillmore left office he married a wealthy widow, Caroline McIntosh. Together they supported many causes such as Buffalo General Hospital. Once the Civil War started Fillmore sided with Lincoln, the current president, for the Union. Fillmore was in command of the Union Continentals and he remained active with them almost until his death. He was one of the men who escorted Lincoln’s body when he died. Fillmore died of a stroke in 1874 this had been his second and last on March 8th.
