LTW Paper George Washington

George Washington should accept the positon as General

“I die hard.” quoted by the famous General George Washington as his last words. One day  the delegates of the Continental Congress were debating who should be the General of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. When John Adams stood up and jokingly suggested Washington because of his “tall stature”. Later Washington sent a letter to his brother, Lawrence Washington, saying he thought himself unworthy of this role. It is not certain if he was showing phony modesty, or if he was genuinely unsure.

All the delegates agree that Washington was suitable for the job, as the last puzzle piece fits in the puzzle. Some people believe Washington should accept the position as General, while others believe Washington should not accept the position as General. Washington should accept the position as General for three reasons; He has battle experience, he wanted authority, and he needed to protect American rights.

The first reason Washington should accept the position as General is that he has battle experience. He had been a part of many battles before and knew what he should expect, plan for, and require. He had been a part of the British military and knew how they fought. And he had won battles before and knew what it took to win.

The second reason Washington should accept the position as General is that he wanted authority. He was prideful in his way of thinking. He wanted to be important not forgotten. And he believed in his image and how people will look back at him, remembering his prosperity as they remember what happened in the newspaper that morning.

The third reason Washington should accept the position as General is that he needed to protect American rights. The British were wrongly taxing Americans on important goods. Washington believed if this went on much longer the Americans would soon be slaves. And he would see to it that Americans were not slaves, but an independent country.

Washington at first thought that he should not accept the position as General because he had never made a battle strategy before. He had always followed others instructions, commands, and orders. And they had fled from many battles before. This is inadequate because he was so intent on not being enslaved that he put his mind to winning the war.

Washington also thought that if he lost it would harm his pride and image that he had worked so hard to build up. He thought would lose all his land and authority. But this is inadequate because he would rather die free, than be a living slave to the British.

Washington should accept the position as General because he has battle experience, he wanted authority, and he needed to protect American rights. This matters to the United States because we wouldn’t be here without him and we should take risks for our country as General Washington did.
