The Truman Doctrine became official on March 12th, 1947. It aided Greece and Turkey with four-hundred-million dollars. Communists had threatened to take over their governments but Truman’s aid protected Greece and Turkey. While some people thought this was unnecessary Truman believed that the U.S. should aid any country or nation from Communism.
What did he do after he left office:
After Truman left office he had financial struggles that caused Congress to pass the Former President Act. It provided any former President 25,000 dollars a year. The only other living Former President was Hoover. He accepted the 25,000 dollars yearly not because he needed money but so that he didn’t embarrass Truman. After he fell in his own home in 1964 his health declined, on December 5th, 1972 he was taken to Kansas city’s Research Center and Medical Center where he died on December 26th.
