What was his major contribution while in office:
George Washington was the man we know as the first president of the United States, which was a big responsibility. He was in charge of people who were poor and ill and some that were dying from the war. Washington had to give people hope that they could survive as a nation. He helped form the federal government so that no one person could have to much power over everyone. He also helped form our military. And now we are a strong nation, thanks to him.
What did he do after he left office:
George Washington was now an old man at the age of 65. He left office after two terms because he didn’t want to feel like a king. But when he went home people from all over the United States continued to visit him. Washington had not had a meal with just him and Martha, his wife, since before the war because people were always invited to have dinner with them. Washington only lived for two years after he left office though. He had been asked by John Adams, the new president, to serve his country again by naming him commander of the American Army but Washington insisted on having Alexander Hamilton lead the army. George Washington died a day after riding on a horse, his last words being “I die hard.”
