James Madison was the president during the War of 1812. He reluctantly declared war because the Americans had been pushing the Indians out of their lands. Finally in 1814, Madison talked over a peace treaty with the British, who had sided with the Indians. The war ended in December 1814.
What did he do after he left office:
James Madison remained active in certain American causes after he left office. And in 1826 he became rector of the University of Virginia, the University created by Thomas Jefferson. He died on June 28th, 1836, a respected man, a great thinker and a statesman who served his country.
