What was his major contribution while in office:

Hayes’s great cause was the civil service reform. Basically he believed that the civil service  shouldn’t be used for political favors. Many politicians gave others jobs as a thank you for a favor or simply for political gain. So Hayes issued an executive order that said civil servants were no longer allowed to take part in the politics.  

What did he do after he left office:

After his presidency Hayes was Commander in Chief of the Loyal Legion from 1888 to his death in 1893. In 1889 he made a speech trying to convince people that African Americans should be allowed to apply for scholarships too. That same year he wife died and while he was deeply saddened his daughter became his traveling partner. He enjoyed seeing his grandchildren too. Hayes died of a heart attack on January 17th, 1893 in his own home.
