The French didn’t like that the US was neutral in the War of the French and British. Trading stopped because neither would give the other goods so Adams ended trade with France. Eventually Tallyrand negotiated an end to the Quasi-war, the war that was never declared, and trade was resumed.

What did he do after he left office:

After office Adams rarely left his home, he and Abigail lived a peaceful life she had been wanting for many years. All of their children lived nearby and some even lived with them. John Quincy Adams had visited and left many times campaigning for the presidential election of 1824. Adams took up writing and some of his friends even brought him topics. On July 4th, 1826, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
